(AFP) At least 28 people are dead and heavy rains since Thursday have left a trail of destruction across Mexico according to reports released Friday by state authorities.

Civil Protection agencies detailed that rainfall has increased in 31 of Mexico's 32 states, which has caused rivers to overflow, flooding entire communities, as well as landslides and landslides on roads, highways and bridges.

The state of Hidalgo is the most affected, with 16 dead, in addition to 1,000 damaged homes and 90 communities cut off, according to authorities.

Authorities in Puebla state, in central Mexico, confirmed nine deaths, eight missing, and some 80,000 people affected.

Official reports reported two deaths in Veracruz (eastern region) and one in Queretaro (central Mexico) due to overflowing rivers.

President Claudia Sheinbaum detailed in messages on the social network X that thousands of military personnel have been deployed, about twenty boats and as many airplanes, in addition to six helicopters to attend to the affected areas.

"The Secretariat of the Navy deployed 3,300 elements in Puebla, Veracruz and San Luis Potosi," wrote the president, who has also held videoconferences with the governors of those districts.

Also, 5,400 army personnel have been mobilized and shelters have been opened to receive those who have had to abandon their homes due to the rising rivers.

State authorities have also set up dozens of shelters to receive entire families who have left their homes because of the threat of new floods, especially in Veracruz, where there are many large riverbeds.
