A magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the coasts of the central Philippines on Tuesday. This was reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter of the quake was located offshore about 7 miles east-southeast of Calape, a municipality in the province of Bohol, with a population of about 33,000.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicated that there is no tsunami threat.

"Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, the earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami," the center explained in a brief alert.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of intense seismic activity that encircles the Pacific basin from Southeast Asia to south of Chile, through Japan, Alaska and Central America.
