Queen Elizabeth II's funeral cost more than $200 million
Eight months after her death, the British Treasury revealed the cost of her funeral in a letter sent to Parliament.
Eight months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the UK Government revealed the cost of her funeral. The total was $201.4 million (£162 million). Ten days of official mourning were declared following her death.
In a letter sent to the British Parliament on Thursday, the Secretary General of the Treasury, John Glen, explained that "the government's priorities were that these events should run smoothly and with the appropriate level of dignity, ensuring at all times the safety of the public."
The total cost is broken down as follows: $91.63 million (£73.68 million) was spent by the Ministry of the Interior. The Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport incurred a cost of $71.41 million (£57.42 million) while $3.18 million (£2.56 million) was spent by the Ministry of Transport. An additional $2.61 million (£2.1 million) was spent by the Foreign Office while the Ministry of Defense spent an estimated $3.59 million (£2.89 million). The Scottish government spent $23.33 million (£18.76 million), which has already been reimbursed, Glen confirmed.
Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96. She was at the head of the British crown for seven decades, making her the longest-reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom.
Eleven days after her death, Queen Elizabeth II was buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle. On May 6, 2023, the United Kingdom celebrated the coronation of King Charles III.
