Oct. 14 is no longer just another day on the calendar. Since 2025, Congress has officially recognized it as the National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk, honoring the young conservative activist whose life was tragically cut short but whose legacy continues to inspire millions.

Who was Charlie Kirk?

Charlie Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, an organization dedicated to empowering students with constitutional values, free markets, and patriotism. At a young age, he became one of the most influential voices in the American conservative movement, challenging progressive dominance on college campuses and promoting civil debate with courage and clarity.

His tragic assassination on Sept. 10, 2025, shook the country. But his message was not extinguished; it sparked a new wave of civic engagement, particularly among young people.

When was Charlie Kirk murdered?

Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10, 2025 while participating in an event at Utah Valley University.

In his honor, President Donald Trump issued a proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half-staff at federal public buildings until Sept. 14.

His funeral and memorial service was held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Sept. 21, 2025, drawing a large crowd. Because of the scale of the event and the presence of political figures, authorities classified it as a high-security event (SEAR Level 1), a designation used for events of national significance.

Senate endorsement of "Charlie Kirk Day"

On September 27, 2025, the Senate passed a resolution, sponsored by Senator Rick Scott (R-Florida), to designate Oct. 14, 2025—what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday—as National Kirk Memorial Day.

The resolution also encouraged educational institutions, civic organizations, and citizens to observe the day in honor of Kirk’s legacy.

The document emphasizes the importance of reflecting on the role of peaceful civic discourse, patriotic education, and civic participation—principles Kirk championed throughout his life.

Oct. 14 is now synonymous with courage, freedom, and patriotism. Charlie Kirk Day honors not only a life but also a mission: raising voices, shaping principled leaders, and building a future where truth and freedom are nonnegotiable.

So far it is not a federal holiday with legal effect—such as closing government offices—but rather a commemorative resolution.
