In an operation described as one of the largest methamphetamine seizures in the region, federal agents intercepted more than 2,300 pounds of the drug hidden in a shipment of celery.

The find occurred at the Atlanta State Farmers Market, located on the outskirts of the city, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said.

"This is the largest meth seizure at DEA Atlanta and third-largest total meth seizure DEA wide ,"DEA Special Agent in Charge Robert Murphy said.

A cross-border operation

The operation began when the DEA received information about a semi-trailer that had crossed the border from Mexico, allegedly loaded with drugs. Federal agents tracked the vehicle to the market in Forest Park, a hub for the distribution of agricultural products in the state. Inside the truck, hidden among bags of celery, they found 2,380 pounds of methamphetamine.

"It was hidden in the celery," explained Robert Murphy, DEA special agent in charge in the region. "Obviously, we threw away the celery. That didn’t make it to the store." The intervention prevented the drug from being distributed on the streets, which authorities say represents a significant blow to smuggling networks.

A growing tactic

Authorities noted an increase in the use of agricultural products as a means of camouflaging drugs, a tactic that allows smugglers to take advantage of the harmless appearance of fresh food to evade detection. In this case, celery served as a cover for a massive quantity of methamphetamines, whose black market value is $3 million wholesale.

"If drugs go through there, there's the potential for contamination, and we know that, and that's why it's important that we keep our consumers safe," Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper said.

Arrest and repercussions

A Mexican national named Jesus Martinez Martinez, was arrested in connection with the smuggling, although authorities have not provided additional details about the suspect or the charges he faces. The DEA is continuing the investigation, which could reveal further connections between this seizure and other drug trafficking operations in the region.

Impact and Concerns

This incident underscores growing concerns about drug trafficking routes through the southeastern United States and the creativity of smugglers to avoid detection. The DEA has reaffirmed its commitment to combat these networks and protect communities from the devastating effects of drugs.

"We’re sending this message loud and clear to those who want to use agriculture as a means to an end, as a cover for criminal activity…you will be caught; you will be prosecuted, and you will go to prison," Harper said.
