China: stabbing at kindergarten leaves at least six dead, including three children
Authorities in Guangdong province detained a 25-year-old suspect.
At least six people, including three children, were killed Monday in a stabbing at a kindergarten in Guangdong, southern China. According to a Public Security Bureau statement reported by local media, this was an "intentional assault" for which a 25-year-old male suspect has since been arrested.
The fatalities include at least three children, a teacher and two parents, AFP reported citing a local city official. There is also one person injured. The attack, according to several local media outlets, was reportedly carried out with a knife, although official sources have not yet verified this.
China has experienced an increase in knife attacks in recent years, including several in schools. Last August, an assailant armed with a knife stormed into a kindergarten in the southeastern province of Jiangxi, killing three people and injuring six others. In April 2021, two children were killed and 16 others were injured during a mass stabbing in Beiliu City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In October 2018, 14 children were injured in a knife attack at a kindergarten in Chongqing, southwest China.
In recent years, Chinese authorities have increased security in schools and their surroundings.
