Kermit the Frog gives graduation speech for students.
Kermit the Frog, one of the famous puppets from The Muppets, was in charge of giving the emotional graduation speech Thursday at the University of Maryland for the class of 2025. It was at that same institution that the show’s creator, Jim Henson, graduated from in 1960.
"Here's a little advice, if you're willing to listen to a frog. ... Consider reaching out your hand and taking the leap side by side, because life is better when we leap together. ... I know the past four years have brought more challenges than anyone expected. Sometimes it can feel like the challenges just keep coming, but look at you: I know that you're going to be OK. Because you're here, you did it!" said the popular puppet dressed in cap and gown, just like the graduates.
Kermit the Frog appealed for greater unity in American society in times of division, while hundreds of students listened attentively to the peculiar statement before receiving their diplomas.
Viral videos and advice from Kermit the Frog
Several videos capturing the amphibian's endearing speech have gone viral on social media on Friday. Also going viral was a piece of advice from the iconic TV character: "Find your people, jump together and connect."
The character, who gave a 15-minute speech, was billed as "a star of the screen" whose simple mission is to "sing, dance and make people happy."
The University of Maryland announced last March that Kermit the Frog, created in 1955 and a central figure in The Muppets franchise, would be the keynote speaker at this year's commencement ceremony.
Jim Henson and his famous puppets
Jim Henson, who died in 1990, studied home economics at the university’s graduate school and created the original frog puppet with one of his mother's coats and a ping-pong ball cut in half, according to a statement from the school.
A bronze statue of Henson and Kermit the Frog sitting on a bench is one of the College Park campus' best-known features.
The Muppets
Owned by the Jim Henson Company for nearly five decades, the Muppets were acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 2004.
