A mass shooting that occurred Friday in Bladensburg, Maryland, left five people injured, three of them critically. Local authorities reported that the victims were traveling in the same car that had just left a cemetery.

In a press conference, Bladensburg Police Chief Tyrone Collington reported that during the noon hour, they received a call about a shooting in the 4300 block of Bladensburg Road in Prince George's County. The people shot had just left a funeral when another dark-colored vehicle approached and shot at them.

"This is uncommon in this community, we have an obligation to protect our residents at all costs, and this was an unnecessary, senseless act of violence that involved individuals discharging firearms in our community; as a result, multiple people were injured," the officer said.

The five victims required immediate attention from first responders before being transported to the hospital, and although all are alive at the moment, three of them are in critical condition.

The police did not give details about the names or ages of the people shot, nor did they give any information on the motive that may have caused the shooting. According to the authorities, the suspects may have left the same funeral as the victims. However, the case is still under investigation.

Collington said surveillance footage is already being sought to help identify the make and model of the vehicle in which the shooters were riding.

As the investigation continues, the Annapolis Road and Bladensburg Road area may remain closed, and authorities have asked local citizens to take alternate routes.

Authorities also recently reported that in the 4300 block of Kenilworth Avenue, an off-duty Bladensburg police officer observed two people engaged in a verbal dispute. During the conflict, an individual fired a pistol into the air from his vehicle before fleeing.
