Planned Parenthood, the organization that provides abortion services, said Thursday that virginity “is a social construct” created by the patriarchy to oppress both women and girls.

The organization used its Twitter account to share its opinion regarding the concept of virginity and even posted images on billboards with the message, “Virginity is a social construct.” According to Planned Parenthood, the idea of virginity “comes from outdated” and “patriarchal ways of thinking, which hurts everyone.”

An ideology that promotes its commercial interests

Immediately after the publication, many people showed outrage in the comments about the organization's objective in promoting this type of ideology.

“Funny how an organization named ‘Planned Parenthood’ (presumably to advocate for people to only become a parent when they plan for it) would tweet something that seems to suggest that abstaining from sex comes from a ‘patriarchal way of thinking that hurts everyone,’” expressed New York Young Republican Club finance chairman Matt Antar.

Antar’s approach was supported by other Twitter users who commented that Planned Parenthood “needs promiscuity to make money.”

“Once again Planned Parenthood is gaslighting the youth, this time into thinking virginity doesn’t exist and that they should throw it away immediately. Why? Could it be because virgins aren’t paying customers to Planned Parenthood? Stop telling children they are sexual beings,” wrote Gays Against Groomers.

Other comments from the organization on virginity

This is not the first time Planned Parenthood has had opinions about virginity. In 2019 they tweeted that virginity was invented and had nothing to do with the hymen, but considered that the concept was different for each person.

“A virgin is someone who’s never had sex. But ‘sex’ means different things to different people, so ‘virginity’ does too,” they continued.
