U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack announced Friday that the governments of Syria and Israelhave reached a cease-fire, following an escalation, after reaching an agreement "embraced" by Jordan, Turkey and other neighboring countries. "We call upon Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis to put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity in peace and prosperity with its neighbors," Barrack, who also serves as President Donald Trump's administration's special envoy for Syria, said on his X account.
The ceasefire comes after Israel decided to bomb Syria on Wednesday, with the Jewish government explaining thatthe reason behind its airstrikes was to protect the Druze community the Arab country, which is a religious minority that in recent decades has had a close relationship with the Jewish nation. Shortly after such attacks, the Syrian government announced that its army would begin the withdrawal from Suwayda, the place where the latest clashes broke out last weekend between Bedouin tribes and Druze militias, which provoked the intervention of government forces, which would have killed hundreds of Druze civilians according to different media.
A "troubling and horrifying" situation
Barrack's announcement came after the Trump Administration worked to end the armed conflict, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that several steps had been agreed to end a situation he described as "troubling and horrifying". Similarly, the agreement comes after the United Nations migration agency reported that nearly 80,000 people were displaced from the Suwayda region following the outbreak of violence last Sunday.

After the Israeli government warned that it would destroy any forces attacking the Druze in Syria, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa sent a message to the minority group in a televised speech on Thursday, in which he assured to reject "any attempt to drag them into the hands of an external party. The Syrian leader added that Israel has "systematically attacked our stability and created divisions among us since the fall of the old regime."
