A jacket that replicates the design of uniforms worn by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents has sparked controversy after becoming a best-seller on Amazon, Newsweek reported.

Available in black and navy blue for just $29.99, the garment tops the popularity charts in the platform's military apparel category, the US media outlet reported. However, its accessibility has raised concerns among authorities, especially over the increase in impersonation cases at a time when US immigration policies, tightened under the Donald Trump administration, have increased tensions in immigrant communities.

Controversy grew following recent incidents illustrating the misuse of these jackets. At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), an attendee was recorded by the group The Good Liars wearing one of these garments, purchased on Amazon. When questioned, he admitted to having no ties to ICE and justified its use as a form of "entertainment." "If you want some entertainment, wear this and go to a Home Depot in a sanctuary city like where I live right now, Washington, DC, and you'll see all the illegals. It's really good." he said.

A more serious case took place on Jan. 29 in Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, where Sean-Michael Johnson, 33, was arrested after posing as an ICE agent to illegally detain a group of Latino men, according to WESU News.

According to court documents and a video recorded by one of the victims, Johnson blocked the group's vehicle and presented himself as a federal officer. Charleston County authorities charged him with kidnapping and impersonation of a law enforcement officer.
