Target joins companies scaling back their DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) initiatives. The company's decision comes after others, such as Amazon, Walmart and Facebook, also announced the end of their DEI policies.

The move was announced in a fact sheet on its corporate site titled "Target’s Belonging at the Bullseye Strategy" which lists some of its actions.

"Throughout 2025, we’ll be accelerating action in key areas and implementing changes with the goal of driving growth and staying in step with the evolving external landscape. We will continue to monitor and adjust as needed" the document said.

Target details that one of its decisions is to conclude its three-year diversity, equity and inclusion goals. In addition, it will also conclude its Racial Equity Action and Change (REACH) initiatives in 2025.

Similarly, Target noted that it will halt all external surveys focused on diversity, including the HRC Corporate Equality Index.

"In every area of our business, we are constantly listening, learning and adjusting to set ourselves up for long-term success. As we start a new fiscal year, we’re continuing to shape the next chapter of Belonging at the Bullseye," the company maintained.

Trump pushes for end to DEI policies

Target's decision comes at a time when President Donald Trump has been relentless about ending DEI policies. This week, the White House Office of Federal Personnel Management (OPM) notified agency and department heads to begin taking steps to end all DEI initiatives. Also, federal workers in those offices were ordered to be placed on paid leave while a plan is developed for the permanent layoff of these staff members.
