Attorney general to release Jack Smith's Jan. 6 report despite Trump's objections
The same will not happen with the report on the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, however, per Judge Aileen Cannon's order.
The Department of Justice reported that Attorney General Merrick Garland plans to release special prosecutor Jack Smith's findings on the events of January 6 on Capitol Hill.
Prior to this, it was learned that the contents of the report on Trump's handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago compound will not be released.
Garland assured that "for the time being," the report on the handling of classified documents by Trump and his co-defendants will be made available for review by the chair and "ranking members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees.
"This limited disclosure will further the public interest in keeping congressional leadership apprised of a significant matter within the Department while safeguarding defendants’ interests", detailed the department's court filing obtained by Axios.
The information comes just a day after Donald Trump's legal team successfully petitioned Attorney General Garland and Judge Aileen Cannon to withhold special prosecutor Jack Smith's final report on the classified documents case. According to the president-elect's defense, they prefer that it be in the hands of the future attorney general whether to release such a report or not.
The motion to Judge Cannon was filed on the anniversary of Jan. 6. That motion was accompanied by a letter from Trump's legal team addressed to Merrick Garland. Cannon allowed Trump's defense appeal and directed in a Tuesday ruling that the report not be published.
