North Korea fired at least one ballistic missile Wednesday, according to the South Korean military. The first missile test in more than five months comes just a week before Donald Trump travels to South Korea to attend an economic forum.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff reported detecting several launches after 8 a.m., according to local media. "The military will enhance surveillance and vigilance in preparation for possible additional launches," senior military officials vowed, as the government called an emergency meeting.

South Korean intelligence sources linked the ballistic test to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum summit, to be held between Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

The meeting will be attended by several international leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump is expected to land two days before its start, and is expected to meet with both his host, President Lee Jae-myung, and Xi.

A possible meeting with North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un remains an unknown. Although Trump showed willingness, Pyonyang responded, for the moment, that they will only agree to meet if the demands that it abandon its nuclear arsenal are abandoned.

During his first term, Trump met with Kim Jong-un on three occasions.
