Intense rainfall in central and eastern Mexico since last week has killed at least 64 people and left 65 others missing, the government said.

The fatalities and major damage are concentrated in the states of Veracruz, Hidalgo and Puebla. Torrential rains have also affected Querétaro and San Luis Potosí, causing flooding and landslides that damaged roads and buildings.

"Let the people of Mexico know that we will give our souls to support the people of Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí. We spare no effort, no support; we are with the people on the ground, we are not going to leave anyone stranded," said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, in a message.

For her part, Laura Velázquez, national head of Civil Protection, said the intense rainfall caused a “significant increase in the level of rivers and streams,” leading to landslides, destruction, and flooding.

The highest death toll has been reported in Hidalgo, where at least 43 people have died as a result of the torrential rains.

Authorities and emergency services are working around the clock to locate those reported missing. The army has also been deployed to assist with search and rescue and cleanup efforts in the affected areas.
