North Korean regime officials in the U.S. have repeatedly refused to receive a letter from President Donald Trump addressed to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

This was reported Wednesday by specialized media outlet NK News. According to the report, the letter was aimed at resuming dialogue between the two nations after years of paralysis.

According to an anonymous source cited by NK News, Trump personally drafted the document that was rejected by diplomatic representatives at the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan. The message was likely an invitation to resume talks that began in Trump's first term, during which he met three times with Kim.

The White House did not respond to media inquiries on this matter.

Kim Jong-un's rapprochement with Putin

Although Trump has previously expressed his willingness to resume contact with Kim, and despite being the only sitting U.S. president to hold a summit with the North Korean leader, attention to North Korea has not exactly been a key focus since his return to power in January.

This alignment coincides with the strengthening of relations between Pyongyang and Moscow, including official visits and military cooperation.

According to experts consulted by NK News, North Korea's rejection of the United States' attempts at dialogue could also be due to the fact that Pyongyang now needs Washington less than it did in Trump's first term. Moreover, the Kim regime could be waiting for a more concrete offer from Trump before moving forward.

During the Republican's first presidency (2017-2021), relations between the countries were marked by historic encounters and rhetoric that fluctuated between confrontation and diplomacy.

The two Koreas: No more garbage balloons or loudspeakers

For their part, relations between the two Koreas are also enduring a tense moment, with the suspension of military communications since 2023.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has promised a policy of de-escalation and reconciliation, including the suspension of propaganda broadcasts to North Korea and opposition to sending out anti-Pyongyang material.

North Korea recently stopped dropping garbage and debris from balloons into the southern peninsula, which has influenced South Korea's decision to disable its border loudspeakers as part of a framework agreement that would reduce "frictions."

So far, Pyongyang has issued no official reaction to the move by Seoul.
