A mayoral candidate in a municipality in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz was shot dead Sunday while holding a campaign rally. The information was confirmed by the state governor.

Local media reported that it was Yesenia Lara, the candidate of the ruling Morena party (left) for mayor of Texistepec, was the target of Sunday night’s attack while marching with a caravan of supporters.

Videos show the moment when the bustling procession, made up of numerous people on motorcycles and carrying Morena flags—the party of President Claudia Sheinbaum—are surprised by the sound of a burst of gunfire, which generated panic and chaos among the participants.

Other images disseminated on social networks show Lara's body lying on the pavement, while other photographs show bystanders close to her also shot down.

"We will find those responsible for this cowardly murder of the Morena candidate and supporters in Texistepec; 4 people dead and 3 wounded," state governor Rocio Nahle, also a Morena militant, reported on her X account.

The local governor added that she instructed security authorities and the prosecutor's office "not to stop" until the perpetrators of the crime are found.

"No position or post is worth the life of a person," Nahle added.

The state of Veracruz, whose strategic location on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico makes it a territory disputed by violent drug cartels, will hold elections on June 1 to renew authorities in 212 municipalities.

The crime, recalled AFP, of the candidate comes just two days after Cecilia Ruvalcaba, a municipal councilwoman in the western state of Jalisco, was murdered inside a hospital, where the victim was also the head nurse.
