The European Union (EU) may be preparing its offensive against Donald Trump and his tariff policy. The alliance has a plan to apply new levies of up to 25% on many US imports.

For his part, President Trump announced - on "Liberation Day" - taxes of 20% on all products coming from EU member countries.

These intentions were explained by Olof Gill, spokesman for Economic Security, Trade and Financial Services of the European Commission (EC), who reported that the alliance plans to counterattack with tariffs, despite then trying to convey a non-belligerent position.

"Early next week" the EU could present the response "to the US tariffs in relation to cars and reciprocal tariffs," Gill said, in remarks picked up by AFP.

The spokesman's remarks come hours after the EC's trade and economic security commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, took a position in favor of removing tariffs on vehicles and industrial goods.

"Trade could benefit from a boost in strategic areas. We've offered 0-for-0 tariffs for cars and industrial goods. We're fully ready to negotiate whenever our US partners are. Meanwhile, our countermeasures work continues," Sefcovic noted.

Specifically, this battery of levies would affect products such as soybeans, poultry, rice, corn, various fruits, nuts, timber, motorcycles, plastics, textiles and cosmetics, among others.

They would not apply, for example, to bourbon, after wine producers in France, Italy or Spain requested that alcoholic products not be taxed in view of the possibility that they would be tariffs of 200%.
