Two road accidents left at least 32 people dead in northern and southern Mexico on Monday, one of which involved a bus coming from the United States, said authorities, who are investigating the causes of both accidents.

As reported by AFP, the first accident, in the morning, involved a bus traveling on a highway in the southern state of Oaxaca and as of Monday night left at least 18 people dead, the local government said.

A dozen injured people are still hospitalized, according to the official report. The first official toll was 11 dead, but seven of the injured died while receiving medical attention.

Local authorities "will carry out the competent investigations to determine the causes of the accident," said Oaxaca Secretary of Government Jesús Romero López in a statement.

According to news reports, the victims are supporters of the ruling party who were returning from Mexico City after attending a rally for President Claudia Sheinbaum, in which she reported on the threats of the United States to impose tariffs.

Another accident was recorded in the state of Durango and involved a truck and a bus that had left the U.S. city of McAllen, Texas, the regional directorate of Civil Protection said.

Ten people survived with injuries, four of whom received attention from paramedics at the scene of the tragedy, while the remainder were transported by their own means to the city of Durango, the state capital.

The official report did not detail the reasons for the accident.

In one of the most tragic accidents so far this year, a separate collision between a cargo truck and a passenger bus left 38 dead in the state of Campeche on Feb. 8.

Disasters involving cargo trucks in Mexico have multiplied in recent years, the main causes being the poor condition of the vehicles, recklessness or driver fatigue.

This has led to the emergence of citizen protests demanding the removal of trucks with double loads from the roads and sanctions on companies that do not properly maintain their fleets.
