The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the lifting of restrictions on Thursday against Belarusian athletes, including teams, that was decided after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

In contrast, Russian athletes will continue to face restrictions and will only be able to participate in international competitions as individuals and under a neutral flag.

Through a statement, the IOC informed that Belarusian athletes will be able to compete under the flag and anthem of their country.

"The International Olympic Committee Executive Board today lifted the recommended conditions of participation for International Federations and international sports event organisers of 28 February 2022 and 28 March 2023 as they relate to Belarus and Belarusian athletes, including the protective measures," the top sports body said.

"The IOC reaffirms that athletes’ participation in international competition should not be limited by the actions of their governments, including involvement in a war or conflict," it added.

Days after Russia invaded Ukraine, the IOC announced disciplinary measures against Russian athletes and against Belarusian athletes. The decision against the latter was based on the support of the Belarusian president, Aleksandr Lukashenko, for Vladimir Putin in the conflict.
