Champions League: Real Madrid, Atlético and Bayern win; Liverpool defeated against the odds

High-scoring games highlighted the first nine matches of Matchday 2 in the 2025-2026 UEFA Champions League 2025/2026. Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and Bayern Munich all defeated their respective opponents in their second games of Europe’s top club competition, while the biggest surprise came in Turkey, where Liverpool were upset by Galatasaray against all odds.
Real Madrid, he Champions League’s most successful team with 15 titles, bounced back from a heavy LaLiga defeat to Atlético Madrid by routing Kairat 5-0 in Kazakhstan. Atlético de Madrid, brimming with confidence and euphoria after recently defeating Real Madrid, carried that momentum into their Champions League clash. The rojiblancos, coached by Diego Pablo Simeone, demolished Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 at the Metropolitano, with goals from Giacomo Raspadori, Robin Le Normand, Antoine Griezmann, Giuliano Simeone and Julián Álvarez.
Liverpool loses in Turkey
Also victorious, with plenty of goals and no goals conceded, were Olympique de Marseille and Inter de Milan. The French side thrashed Ajax 4-0 at home, while the Italians, led by a brilliant Lautaro Martínez, defeated Slavia Praha 3-0. Chelsea also won 1-0 against SL Benfica, managed by former Blues coach José Mourinho, at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool failed to earn any points on the second matchday of the Champions League. The Reds—who suffered an unexpected loss to Galatasaray in Turkey—are fueling doubts about their performance in this edition of Europe’s top club competition.
In Tuesday’s other matches, Atalanta defeated Club Brugge 2-1 in Italy, while Tottenham could only manage a 2-2 draw against Bodo/Glimt in Norway.
