The last two UEFA Champions League champions are mired in a deep crisis. Real Madrid continue to struggle in this edition of their beloved competition, suffering another defeat, this time at the Santiago Bernabéu against AC Milan (1-3).

The team coached by Italian Carlo Ancelotti continues to generate doubts despite the arrival of Kylian Mbappé. Their start to the season -both in the Champions League and La Liga- has been seriously undewhelming, and this latest loss to AC Milan only further highlights the ongoing struggles.

The Italians took the lead with a headed goal by German Malick Thiaw. Vinícius Júnior equalized shortly after with a penalty, but with just minutes left in the first half, Álvaro Morata - a former Real Madrid player - put AC Milan ahead again. Dutchman Tijjani Reijnders scored in the 73rd minute.

The Real Madrid fans ended up whistling at their players in protest at the team's poor form. Some of them, such as Aurélien Tchouaméni, were singled out. "We have to be worried, we are not giving a good version," Ancelotti said after the match.

Real Madrid, who have six points from 12 played, will look to break their Champions League losing streak against Liverpool at Anfield, one of the toughest stadiums in European soccer.

City succumbs in Lisbon

In another of the day's big games, Sporting CP delivered a massive shock by beating Manchester City (4-1) at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon with a hat trick from Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Both teams left a very evenly matched first half. However, it was the Portuguese who upped the tempo in the last 45 minutes and ended up taking all three points.

Phil Foden put Manchester City ahead in the fourth minute. Gyokeres, wanted by Europe's top teams, equalized before the end of the first 45 minutes. In the second half, with a scandalous first five minutes, Maximiliano Araujo and, once again, Gyokeres increased the difference. With 10 minutes to go, the Swedish striker closed out the scoring with a penalty.

In their next Champions League clash, Manchester City will face Feyenoord at home, aiming to add three more points to the seven they already have.

The rest of the matchday left the following results: PSV 4-0 Girona; Slovan Bratislava 1-4 Dinamo Zagreb; Bologna 0-1 Monaco; Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Sturm Graz; Celtic 3-1 RB Leipzig; Lille 1-1 Juventus; and Liverpool 4-0 Bayer Leverkusen.
