Climate activist Greta Thunberg reappeared Tuesday before the media after being released by Israeli authorities. Her first public statement was a sarcastic response to President Donald Trump, who had questioned her behavior.

"I think the world needs many more young angry women, to be honest... Especially with everything going on right now. That’s the thing we need the most of" Thunberg said.

Her remarks came shortly after Trump, when asked about her arrest, commented, "[s]he’s a strange person. She’s a young, angry person... She’s certainly different. I think she has to go to an anger management class. That’s my primary recommendation for her."

Detention during attempt to break naval blockade

Thunberg was stopped briefly by Israeli forces as she attempted to reach Gaza aboard the British-flagged yacht Madleen, operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which was carrying a small, symbolic cargo of humanitarian aid. The ship was intercepted and its occupants arrested. Hours later, Thunberg was released without being charged.

Maritime blockade and aid under supervision

Israel has maintained a naval blockade of the Gaza Strip for years, backed by Egypt and justified on security grounds due to Hamas' control of the enclave. In this context, the Israeli authorities insist that all humanitarian assistance must be channeled exclusively through official and coordinated mechanisms to avoid the smuggling of weapons or materials that could be used for military purposes.

A crossover that is not new

The exchange of statements between Trump and Thunberg is not new. In the past, the activist has been the target of criticism by the president, who has questioned both her speech and her attitude. For her part, Thunberg has responded on more than one occasion with ironic comments.
