Sexual assaults and harassment on the rise at military academies
According to a Pentagon study, 155 complaints were filed by students in the 2021-2022 academic year, 24 more than the previous year.
The Department of Defense (DOD) recorded an increase in sexual assault and harassment cases in military schools during the 2021-2022 academic year.
Through a survey of 1,130 students, the Pentagon detailed that 155 sexual assault complaints were filed by enrolled cadets and midshipmen at the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. This figure represents an increase of 24 sexual assaults over the previous year.
A total of 206 incidents were reported across students, faculty and civilians in 2021-2022, compared to just 161 in the 2020-2021 academic year.
The Pentagon revealed that around 12,700 students suffered episodes of sexual harassment or assault. Sixty-three percent of women reported experiencing an incident of sexual assault compared to just 20% of men. In addition, it was reported that, of the 1,130 students surveyed, only 14% reported it to military instructors.
