One dead and eight injured in intentional hit-and-run in Brooklyn
Two of the people injured by the U-Haul truck were transported to a hospital in critical condition. One died a day later.
A U-Haul truck ran over several pedestrians early Monday morning, apparently intentionally, on the sidewalks of New York City. Eight people were injured, two of them critically, before police were able to corner the vehicle against a building after an intense chase. A day later, one of the critically injured was reported dead.
It all started Monday morning. Police began chasing a U-Haul truck. AP reported the driver sped up through Brooklyn's Bay Ridge neighborhood. During the chase, he ran over several pedestrians on a sidewalk. Minutes later, police stopped him more than three miles from where it all began, near the entrance to a tunnel that connects Brooklyn to Manhattan. According to the tweet posted by New York City Councilman Justin Brannan, the suspect, who is a middle-aged man, was arrested in Sunset Park:
The bomb squad searched the vehicle for explosives
During the chase, at least eight people were injured, state police told Fox News. However, the severity of their injuries has not been confirmed, beyond the fact that two of them are in critical condition.
In addition, AP reports, aerial video shot by a news helicopter showed the truck on the sidewalk as the NYPD bomb squad rushed to the scene to verify that the truck did not contain explosives.
The investigation is ongoing. However, New York City Mayor Eric Adams reassured citizens that "there are no additional credible threats at this time."
