On orders from President Trump in mid-August, an arsenal was deployed in waters near Venezuela as part of his administration’s efforts to combat drug trafficking linked to the Cártel de los Soles and the Tren de Aragua. The deployment also aimed to pressure Nicolas Maduro’s regime, which is accused of having alliances with various criminal organizations operating across the hemisphere.

  • The USS San Antonio (LPD-17) is an amphibious transport ship designed with a modern focus on network-centric warfare and played a key role in operations such as Odyssey Lightning in Libya. The ship is 684 feet long with a deck width of 105 feet and has a maximum speed of 22 knots.

The ship can carry approximately 350 sailors and up to 800 Marines. It supports operations for CH-46, CH-53, and MV-22 Osprey helicopters.

The USS San Antonio is equipped with two RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) launchers, two 20-mm Phalanx CIWS, two 25-mm Mk 38 chain guns, as well as .50-caliber and other light weapons stations.

  • The USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28) is a San Antonio-class amphibious landing ship designed for expeditionary operations, amphibious landings, and humanitarian missions. Its crew size and armament are similar to those of the USS San Antonio.

The guided missile destroyers

  • The USS Gravely (DDG-107) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, Flight IIA variant, designed for air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and surface combat operations. It is named after Vice Admiral Samuel L. Gravely, a pioneer in racial integration in the armed forces.

The destroyer is equipped with the Aegis air defense system and carries more than 90 missiles, including Tomahawk missiles for ground attacks, Standard Missiles (SM-2, SM-3, SM-6) for air defense, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM), and anti-submarine missiles (ASROC).

The USS Gravely features a dual hangar for MH-60R Seahawk helicopters and is equipped with advanced sensors for anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

The destroyer has a crew of approximately 300 sailors and has taken part in maritime security operations in the Gulf of America, as well as strategic deployments in the Mediterranean and Red Sea.

  • The USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109) is a destroyer with the same dimensions and combat capabilities as the USS Gravely. It was named in honor of Sergeant Jason L. Dunham, a Marine posthumously decorated with the Medal of Honor for heroism in Iraq in 2004.
  • The USS Sampson (DDG-102) is equipped with similar capabilities to the Jason Durham and Gravely, and was named in honor of Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, a key figure in the Spanish-American War.

The war against the Cártel de los Soles begins

During a press conference in the Oval Office Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced a U.S. military operation in the southern Caribbean against a Venezuelan drug-laden ship, describing it as an event that occurred "moments ago."

Flanked by top national security officials and Vice President JD Vance, Trump said the U.S. military "took down" the ship, sending a strong message against drug trafficking from Venezuela.

"In the last few minutes, we literally mowed down a ship, a ship loaded with drugs," Trump said during the conference. "There was a lot of drugs on that ship. And you'll see it and read about it. It happened just moments ago."
