The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced 538 arrests and 373 detainers issued in the first days of the Trump administration. This was announced on social media through an infographic illustrating the aforementioned data collected by the agency responsible for enforcing federal laws related to immigration.
Between January 21 and 22, the Office of Enforcement and Removal (ERO), which is part of ICE, arrested people with charges or convictions for crimes such as sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault and drug-related offenses.
Agents arrested individuals from many different countries, including Afghanistan, Angola, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Senegal and Venezuela.
As reported by Fox 5 New York, ICE raids have already begun in states such as New York, California, Massachusetts, Illinois, Florida, Utah, Minnesota and Maryland. Specifically, authorities are looking for undocumented immigrants with criminal records.
"From the beginning, these are public safety threats: those who are in the country illegally and have been convicted or arrested for serious crimes," Tom Homan, White House border czar, said of the recent raids.
What does ICE do?
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is charged with protecting the country from illegal immigration and border crime. Specifically, it enforces federal laws related to immigration, customs and border control.
"The agency has an annual budget of approximately $8 billion, dedicated primarily to three operational directorates - Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), and Office of Chief Counsel (OPLA). A fourth directorate - Management and Administration (M&A) - supports the three operating branches to advance ICE's mission," they explain on their website.
