Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Joe Biden will travel to Israel on Wednesday following an invitation by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Although National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson stated on Sunday that the White House did not have a trip by the president to announce, the secretary of state shared the news on Monday that Biden will visit Israel.

"On Wednesday, [President Biden] will visit Israel. He's coming here at a critical moment for Israel, for the region, and for the world," Blinken shared via X.

Biden's visit to Israel will reiterate U.S. support for Israel and serve as a warning to others in the region who could be planning to join the attacks against the Jewish state.

The trip will also allow Biden to privately discuss some concerns raised by the impending massive ground operation in Gaza.

"Biden needs to look Netanyahu in the eye and make sure he understands that America's global reputation is at stake and an occupation of Gaza will drag both countries into a protracted conflict," said Kirsten Fontenrose, a former U.S. national security official, per Reuters.

However, the trip also represents a significant security risk for the president. On Monday, Blinken himself experienced this danger when he met with Netanyahu in Tel Aviv and was forced to take shelter with the prime minister in a bunker for several minutes when the air sirens began to sound.

"Presidential visits try to be tightly choreographed, and wars are never tightly choreographed," said Jon Alterman, senior vice president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby also announced that the president will meet with other world leaders on his trip. He will travel to Jordan, where he will meet with Jordanian King Abdullah and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, among others.

[Biden] will certainly reiterate that Hamas does not stand for the Palestinian people's right to dignity and self-determination. ... He'll discuss again the humanitarian needs of all civilians in Gaza.
