Republican Congressman Jim Jordan has put himself in the race to be the next speaker of the House of Representatives. He is the first to announce his intention to replace Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted Tuesday.

"Now is the time for our Republican conference to come together to keep our promises to Americans. The problems we face are challenging, but they are not insurmountable. We can focus on the changes that improve the country and unite us in offering real solutions. But no matter what we do, we must do it together as a conference. I respectfully ask for your support for Speaker of the House of Representatives," Jordan wrote in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

There are already two Republican representatives who have supported Jordan's candidacy. "I support Jim Jordan for speaker," wrote Thomas Massie. "We need a conservative fighter to stand up strong to the Biden White House and Democrat Senate and I can't think of anyone better than Jim Jordan," said Jim Banks.

Jordan was not one of the eight Republicans who voted to impeach McCarthy. These were Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, Bob Good, Matt Rosendale, Eli Crane, Ken Buck, Tim Burchett and Nancy Mace.
