Could Donald Trump be the new speaker of the House? Until a few hours ago, that possibility seemed remote, but the recent ousting of Kevin McCarthy has opened the door for the former president, who has several Republicans who would support him. The most blunt has been the Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas. He stated on X (formerly Twitter) that he would nominate Trump for the position:

In addition, the Republican explained on The Rita Cosby Show that he would fill out the necessary paperwork so that the former president can present his candidacy as Republican leader in the House of Representatives, since, for him, there is no one better for the position:

The reason I nominate Donald J. Trump for speaker of the House is because there is no rule or law that says the speaker of the House must be a member of the House of Representatives. So I said to myself, who better than Donald J. Trump? This is the guy that could come in and repair the brokenness in the House of Representatives, bring us together, make America – and make Congress – great again. In the meantime, before he becomes the 47th, why doesn’t he come over to the House of Representatives and provide that leadership he showed the American people when he was president and come in and do that as our speaker for a short time? He’s going to come and assume the speaker role, do that for about 16 months, and then we’ll inaugurate him on January 20, 2025, as the 47th president.

Republicans who would support Trump as speaker of the House

The idea, however, was proposed a few hours earlier by Sean Hannity, who announced on his Fox News show that Republicans could be considering Trump as the new speaker of the House of Representatives:

Sources telling me at this hour that some House Republicans have been in contact with, and have started an effort to draft, former President Donald Trump to be the next speaker and I have been told that President Trump might be open to helping the Republican party, at least in the short term.

In fact, Newsweek reports, Hannity took advantage of his scheduled interview with Ohio Representative Jim Jordan to ask about the possibility. This was his response:

I don't know, he'd be great but I want Donald Trump to be the next president of the United States...that's where we need him is at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. If he wants to be speaker then that's fine too.

He was not the only one. Other Republicans also support the idea of Donald Trump as speaker of the House, at least in the short term. Representatives such as Marjorie Taylor Greene or Greg Steube assured that they would not mind having the former president as a speaker:
