Juan Luis Guerra triumphs at the Latin Grammys in Miami
The Dominican Republic native wins best album and best recording with his album "Radio Güira" and the song "Mambo 23."
Juan Luis Guerra was the big winner at the 25th Latin Grammy Awards held Thursday in Miami, Florida, taking home two of the gala's most coveted awards: Album of the Year for Radio Güira and Record of the Year for the song Mambo 23.
The Dominican artist, an idol of Latin music, beat heavyweights such as Shakira, Karol G and Residente to win the gramophone for best album, and now has 28 Latin Grammys in his career.
Jorge Drexler won another of the most prestigious awards of the night, Song of the Year, with Derrumbe.
"I'm very happy that they have accepted to put in the context of this academy, a small song, two minutes and a little bit, and sad," Drexler said about the song that was also named Best Song by the singer-songwriter.
Colombian Carlos Vives, voted "Person of the Year" by the Latin Recording Academy, kicked off the gala with a medley of his greatest hits.
Fruta fresca, La tierra del olvido and Pa' Mayté got the audience at the Kaseya Center in Miami dancing. The Florida city, home to a large Latino community, vibrated with a three-hour-long ceremony.
Other winners
Other big winners of the night were Edgar Barrera and Nathy Peluso, who each won three gramophones.
The Mexican-American, who led the number of nominations in this edition with nine, won prestigious awards such as producer of the year and composer of the year. After this edition, he now has 26 Latin Grammys.
Argentina's Nathy Peluso won best music video in full-length format, best alternative song with El día que perdí mi juventud and best rap or hip hop song with Aprender a amar.
For the latter song, Peluso shared the award with musician and producer Pablo Drexler, son of Jorge Drexler.
Natalia Lafourcade, the most awarded female artist at the Latin Grammys, took home a gramophone as co-writer of Best Pop/Rock Song, 5 horas menos, with the Argentine Conociendo Rusia. With this award, the Mexican singer now has 18 Latin Recording Academy awards to her name.
Artists such as Brazilian Anitta, Mexican Carín León and Argentine rapper Trueno sang at the gala, as well as international stars such as Jon Bon Jovi, who presented the "Person of the Year" award to Carlos Vives.
Multi-award-winning stars such as Alejandro Sanz, Gloria Estefan and Juanes took the stage to present awards.
Chilean singer Mon Laferte won Best Alternative Music Album for Autopoietic, and Colombia's Ela Taubert was named Best New Artist.
In this quarter-century edition, the Latin Grammys include a new genre, electronic music, and debut two categories: Best Latin Electronic Music Performance and Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album.
The awards are given by a vote of Latin Recording Academy members for works released between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024. Selected works must have at least 60% of the lyrics in Spanish, Portuguese or another regional language.
