Special prosecutor Jack Smith, who is investigating Donald Trump for his alleged ties to the Capitol assault, has subpoenaed Mike Pence to testify. Justice wants to know if the former vice president had any interaction with Donald Trump during the event that occurred on January 6, 2021. This same Department of Justice (DoJ) official is also leading the inquiry into the Mar-a-Lago raid case.

As sources connected to the investigation told ABC News, the request for Pence to testify follows months of negotiations between judicial officials and the former vice president's lawyers. This decision comes as Pence decides whether to compete with Trump in the upcoming Republican Party primaries and run as a nominee for the U.S. presidency.

Classified documents

Pence resisted testifying in the now-defunct House committee investigating the Capitol assault. A commission that was chaired by the Democratic Party and was dissolved after the Blues lost their majority in the House of Representatives in the last midterm elections.

In late January, one of Pence's lawyers, found dozens of classified documents in the former vice president's residence in Carmel, Indiana. The defense then turned the material over to the FBI.

It should be noted that it was Pence himself who asked his lawyer to search his home in case he located any documents, after classified material was found in the properties of other high-ranking officials such as Joe Biden.
