Mark Hamill faces criticism for liking a J.K. Rowling tweet

The 'Star Wars' actor was embroiled in a major controversy for supporting the 'Harry Potter' author's stance.

Since making her opinion known on sex and gender identity, J.K. Rowling and her work have become the focus of criticism from many LGTBQ movements. That's why, this week, actor Mark Hamill found himself embroiled in controversy after liking a tweet from the writer.

The Harry Potter author made it clear some time ago that, for her, sex is a biological reality and not a social construct. This statement evoked anger from many of her followers, for which she often receives insults or offensive messages on social media.

One person who took aim at Rowling was British journalist India Willlough, who is a trans woman. The news anchor wrote on her Twitter account that she is "more of a woman than JK Rowling will ever be," to which the writer responded, "Citation needed."

Within minutes of the response, Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga, liked the post, unleashing a wave of criticism and insults for supporting Rowling's stance.

Due to the controversy generated by his reaction, the actor had to clarify his position: "What I 'liked' about this exchange was someone speaking their truth to power. Twitter is, unfortunately, no place for nuance," Hamill wrote. He added: "It's imperative I make this abundantly clear: I support human rights for EVERYONE, regardless of their gender identity, PERIOD."

Hamill's clarification was not enough for many, and he continued to receive hateful messages from folks online. For one, Lindsey Boylan, a progressive activist and once an aide to former New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, said she didn't think it was a "great response."
