(AFP) The former chairwoman of the Supreme Court of Nepal, Sushila Karki, was appointed to lead the transition as the country's next prime minister after violent protests toppled the previous government, the president's office said Friday.

Karki, 73, will take office later Friday and become the first woman to lead the country.

The Himalayan nation of 30 million was plunged into chaos this week after authorities attempted to crack down on demonstrations against the government's decision to block social media and against corruption.

At least 51 people were killed during the protests, which began Monday, police said Friday in their latest toll.

KP Sharma Oli, 73, a Communist Party leader, announced his resignation as prime minister on Tuesday, during a day marked by riots in which protesters burned the parliament building. His whereabouts are unknown.
