Nationalist historian Karol Nawrocki has won Poland’s presidential election, according to official results released Monday — a setback for Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government.

The national election commission announced that Karol Nawrocki, 42, who shares views closely aligned with former U.S. President Donald Trump, won 50.89% of the vote in Sunday’s election. His opponent, 53-year-old Rafał Trzaskowski — the pro-European mayor of Warsaw and a key ally of Prime Minister Donald Tusk — received 49.11%.

Voter turnout reached 71.63% of the eligible electorate.

Nawrocki was backed by the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, which governed Poland from 2015 to 2023 and maintains close ties with outgoing President Andrzej Duda.

"Congratulations to the winner" posted the conservative President Andrzej Duda on X, thanking the public for “fulfilling their civic duty” by voting.

"It was a difficult, sometimes painful, but extremely courageous fight for Poland, for how the affairs of our Homeland should be conducted," Duda added.

"Poland first”

During his campaign, the president-elect visited the White House and claimed that Donald Trump told him, “You’re going to win.” Nawrocki ran on the slogan “Poland first, Poles first,” emphasizing a nationalist agenda. He also pledged to continue Poland’s support for neighboring Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion.

Pulling back on the progressive agenda

Nawrocki’s victory could pose a significant obstacle to Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s progressive agenda, particularly on issues such as abortion and LGBTQ rights. As AFP noted, many of Nawrocki’s supporters voiced support during the campaign for stricter immigration controls and greater national sovereignty in relation to the European Union.
