Journalist Gerardo Torres Rentería, former correspondent for Reuters, TV Azteca and Telemundo, was murdered on Thursday night at his home in the port of Acapulco, Guerrero (Mexico), according to the Alianza de Medios organization.

Torres Rentería is the second journalist to be murdered in Mexico so far in 2023, continuing the trend of crimes against news professionals unleashed in recent years in the Aztec country. On February 12, journalist Abisaí Pérez Romero was murdered in Tula, Hidalgo.

According to local media reports, the 59-year-old reporter was assaulted by armed men who broke into his home located in the Icacos neighborhood in the port of Acapulco, and after shooting at him they fled.

The reporter, known as "El Negro Torres", was a correspondent for the U.S. network and was dedicated to the coverage of nota roja, the journalistic genre that reports on crime among other issues.

In 2022, Mexico was the most dangerous country for the press (of those not at war), registering a dozen deaths, in addition to multiple threats and aggressions. Since 2018, the year of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's inauguration, nearly 40 journalists have been murdered in the country.
