With 42 points and 23 rebounds from Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Lakers added their fourth straight win Monday by defeating the Charlotte Hornets, 112-107, while the Rockets earned a fast-paced win over the Celtics on a winning basket by second-year player Amen Thompson.
In Charlotte, the Hornets found no answer to the paint dominance of Davis, who recorded his fifth career game with at least 40 points and 23 rebounds.
The center, who scored 17 of his 28 shots from the field, punished the Hornets as early as the first quarter with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Next to him, LeBron James finished with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists.
The Hornets, second-to-last in the Eastern Conference with 12 wins and 31 losses, did not give up even with the injury suffered by their star, LaMelo Ball, in the second quarter.
The point guard, who had 7 points in nine minutes, suffered a sprained left ankle while backpedaling after hitting a 3-pointer and tripped over Lakers power forward Jarred Vanderbilt.
Shortly afterward the Hornets advanced that Ball, who has a long history of ankle problems, would not return to the court as he suffered a sprain.
With this win, the Lakers climb to fifth place in the West with a 26-18 record.
Game-winner from Amen Thompson
In another of Monday's 12 NBA games, the Houston Rockets won by a tight 114-112 duel on the road against the Boston Celtics in a thrilling matchup between the second-ranked teams in each conference.
Amen Thompson played the best game of his young career with 33 points, a career high, as well as 10 rebounds and 4 assists.
The 21-year-old guard was also responsible for the decisive basket when the game was tied at 112 and the visitors had four seconds for one last possession.
Thompson took advantage of a Celtics defensive miscue to drive to the basket against his defender, Jaylen Brown, and seal Houston's win with a mid-range shot.
"It was my first basket to win a game. I feel like Kobe," said a beaming Thompson.
The shooting guard, taken fourth In the 2023 NBA Draft, has been one of the most outstanding young players to start the year, with averages of 18.8 points, 11.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the last nine games.
Alongside him, forward Dillon Brooks also surpassed his career high in 3-pointers made, with 10, and scored 36 points.
For the Celtics, Jaylen Brown added 28 points and Jayson Tatum another 19, all in the second half.
Double overtime without Butler
Hours after indefinitely suspending star Jimmy Butler, the Miami Heat beat the Orlando Magic 125-119 in a matchup of Florida teams that required two overtimes.
Guard Tyler Herro was Miami's offensive leader with 30 points, to which he added 12 assists, and German forward Franz Wagner was the Magic's leader with another 29.
Before the game, the Heat announced that Butler, who has demanded his departure from the franchise, will be sidelined from the team until at least the trade deadline on Feb. 6.
The suspension was handed down after the shooting guard left Monday's practice upon learning he would be benched for the game against the Magic, in which he was due to return to the lineup following a previous two-game suspension.
Another strong performance on the night came from Nikola Jokic, who recorded his 21st triple-double of the season in his Denver Nuggets' 129-121 loss to the Chicago Bulls.
The Serbian center, reigning MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the league, accumulated 33 points, 12 rebounds and 14 assists, though it did not prevent the victory by the home team, led by guard Zach Lavine, with 21 points.
At the end of the day, the Phoenix Suns defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 111-109 with 26 points from Devin Booker and another 24 from Kevin Durant.
