NBA: Jokic gets revenge on Wembanyama in Nuggets' overtime win over Spurs
The MVP took the second meeting against the NBA's most promising big man. A dazzling Anthony Edwards was not enough for the Minnesota Timberwolves to defeat the Detroit Pistons.
In less than 24 hours, the story took a 180-degree turn. While on Friday Frenchman Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to the victory against the Denver Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokic, the next day the Serbian did the same with a final score of 122-111.
The reigning MVP scored 46 points on Saturday night, totaling 87 in the two days. He also had 9 rebounds, 10 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Wembanyama had a double-double of 20 points and 23 rebounds for San Antonio.
The evenly matched game, 10 times tied and with 14 lead changes, was defined in overtime, when the young Frenchman seemed to fade away, leaving all the spotlight to Jokic.
Cunningham leads Pistons over Wolves
Meanwhile, at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena, the hosts defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 119-105, in a game in which Wolves guard Anthony Edwards had one of the best nights of his career, scoring 53 points.
Edwards, 23, set a new career high in points, with the fifth best mark in the NBA's 2024-2025 season, which is led by Sacramento's De'Aaron Fox with 60, according to AFP. He also made 10 3-pointers, four shy of tying the all-time record held by Klay Thompson.
Cade Cunningham was the star for the Detroit Pistons with 40 points, shooting 52% from the field.
76ers outlast Nets, Pacers string together third win
In another game of the day, the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Brooklyn Nets 123-94, with Joel Embiid completing a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds.
Embiid, 30, who was questionable for the game with foot and nose injuries, was perfect from the free-throw line, scoring all 10 of his attempts.
D'Angelo Russell played his third game after being traded by the Los Angeles Lakers to Brooklyn. He scored 5 points in 14 minutes before leaving with a shin injury.
The Indiana Pacers achieved their third win in the last four games by beating the Phoenix Suns 126-108. Tyrese Haliburton scored 27 points to become the leading scorer, while Bennedict Mathurin completed a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Indiana evens its record at 18 wins and 18 losses and remains among the playoff contenders.
Jazz and Bulls earn victories
The Utah Jazz defeated the Miami Heat 136-100 in the first of a seven-game suspension for Jimmy Butler, the Heat star who asked to leave the team this week because of internal problems.
Similarly, the Chicago Bulls defeated the New York Knicks 139-126. Coby White and Zach LaVine were the Bulls' top scorers with 33 points apiece.
For New York, Josh Hart completed a double-double with 16 rebounds and 10 assists despite finishing with no points, while Dominican Karl-Anthony Towns scored 44 points on 59% shooting (17/29).
