Shipping containers downed in California
Dozens of cargo containers fell off a ship docked at a California port Tuesday, halting operations at the shipping terminal.
The Coast Guard said at least 67 containers fell into the sea around 9 a.m., but no one was injured in the incident.
"Cargo operations were suspended temporarily at the terminal while workers act to secure the containers," said Art Marroquin, a port spokesman.
Containers fell like dominoes
A video posted by Fox shows the moment containers fall from a huge ship on which huge cargo cranes are advancing at the port of Long Beach, near Los Angeles.
In the aerial images, it is possible to see several of the containers dented after falling into what appears to be a support vessel. It is also possible to observe several trailers of containers around the Missississippi, a Portuguese-flagged vessel.
Several of the boxes, roughly 40 feet long, were beginning to sink into the sea, while others continued to float stacked on top of each other. At the moment, it is unknown what is inside them, but journalists at the terminal reported seeing shoes and clothes floating in the water.
One of the most important ports in the U.S.
It is also one of the most important terminals for goods from Asia, and connects to more than 200 ports in the rest of the world.
