Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón provided an update Thursday on the Menendez brothers' case. Gascón said they are reviewing the conviction, in which they were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989, to determine whether they should be resentenced and potentially released.

Similarly, Gascón explained that his office is also reviewing evidence included in the petitions the brothers filed last year alleging sexual abuse by their father.

In addition, prosecutors may also review whether the inmates have been rehabilitated based on their actions in prison and determine whether they could be released from prison, depending on what the court decides.

Lyle and Erik Menendez were sentenced to life in prison in 1998 for murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. The brothers admitted that they shot their father, an entertainment executive, and their mother.

The subjects claimed they feared their parents were about to kill them to prevent disclosure of the father's alleged long-term sexual abuse of Erik. At the time, prosecutors argued that the sons were seeking their parents' multimillion-dollar estate and concluded that there was no evidence of sexual abuse.

The case regained relevance after the premiere of the series Monsters: the Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which recounts the events and which premiered on September 19, 2024.
