RNC Chairman Michael Whatley announces his candidacy for Senate in North Carolina
His most likely opponent in the general election is Roy Cooper, the popular former Democratic governor, whose campaign raised $3.4 million in the first 24 hours.

The chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), Michael Whatley, announced his candidacy for the Senate in North Carolina in 2026. He made this known through his social media, just days after Lara Trump confirmed that she would not compete in this election. His most likely rival in the general election is Roy Cooper, the popular former Democratic governor, whose campaign raised $3.4 million in the first 24 hours.
Whatley will seek to fill the seat being vacated by Thom Tillis, who opted not to seek re-election after voting against the "Big Beautiful Bill."
"I’m excited to announce my campaign for the U.S. Senate to represent the great state of North Carolina!" the Republican wrote on his X account.

I am humbled and excited to begin this campaign, and I would be honored to earn your vote, your support, and your prayers.

It will be the first time Whatley has sought elective office in his more than 20-year political career. Previously, he worked in the George W. Bush White House, served as chief of staff to Sen. Elizabeth Dole and was chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party.
In 2024, he won Trump's endorsement to succeed Ronna McDaniel as chairman of the Republican National Committee, a position he has held ever since. Under his leadership, the party managed to regain the White House and the majority in the Senate.
As reported by Politico, the White House sees him as a "solid" candidate and capable of uniting the different factions of the party. The president described him as a "smart, tough lawyer who put together a completely unprecedented electoral integrity operation."
This race is expected to be one of the most expensive of the midterm elections, given that it is one of the few competitive seats Republicans will have to defend. Former Governor Cooper was one of the most coveted recruits in the Democratic leadership, who see North Carolina as the best chance to win in 2026.

The electoral map for the next cycle is shaping up to be favorable, given that Republicans are defending few seats in key states and have three clear attack opportunities - Georgia, Michigan and New Hampshire.
On the Democratic side, North Carolina appears to be the best opportunity to take a seat away from the Republican Party. While the GOP has been prevailing in the Tar Heel State in federal elections, all of the state's elected officials are Democrats.
