Fani Willis received more than 35 visits from Nathan Wade before hiring him in the case against Trump in Georgia
The former president's lawyers say the Fulton County district attorney could have benefited financially from the hire of Wade.
Court documents filed by Donald Trump's defense this Friday revealed that the Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis received more than 35 visits from Nathan Wade since 2021. They claim she could have benefited financially from the hiring of the special counsel to help her with the case against the former president in Georgia.
Both Willis and Wade maintain that their romantic relationship began in 2022 and that they saw each other fewer than 10 times before Wade was hired in November 2021.
This court filing is based on several phone records that demonstrate Wade's visits before his hiring, including 2,000 calls and around 12,000 messages that the two shared between January and November 2021.
Trump's lawyers have put Willis in the crosshairs, going so far as to request her removal from the case due to potentially having obtained financial benefit.
The request was heard by the judge in the case, Scott McAfee, who said that this disqualification could occur if the allegations of the former president's defense are proven. "[Willis] has admitted that there was a relationship. So what remains to be proven is the existence and extent of any financial benefit," the judge said.
Through a spokesperson, Willis indicated that she is preparing a response to contradict the Trump team's allegations, as reported by Fox News.
