Californian artificial intelligence start-up OpenAI reached a strategic agreement with American semiconductor manufacturer AMD, which will make it a stakeholder, to buy a massive volume of chips. The information was confirmed by the companies.

According to a joint statement, this order comprises graphics cards, also called GPUs (graphics processing unit), essential for the development of artificial intelligence (A.I.).

In total, AMD committed to supply GPUs with a total power of 6 gigawatts (GW).

Prior to the Wall Street market opening, AMD shares were up more than 30%.

While it is not possible to determine the exact number of processors on basis solely on this figure, this represents several million GPUs.

With this alliance, OpenAI is demonstrating its intention to diversify its semiconductor supply sources, so as not to rely solely on the industry giant, U.S.-based Nvidia.

Nvidia and OpenAI

In late September, Nvidia announced an investment of up to $100 billion in OpenAI to create an infrastructure for "next-generation" artificial intelligence.

This is a major influx for the Santa Clara, Calif.-based group, which, according to experts, faces competition, in addition to Nvidia, from China's Huawei, as well as Amazon and Google.
