At least 13 people have died in five states around the country after storms and strong winds were recorded as a result of the massive winter storm. The National Weather Service announced that the storm is making its way to the northeast of the country.
According to authorities, at least four people died in Kentucky, three in Alabama, two in Tennessee, one in Mississippi and two each in Arkansas and California. On Thursday, one person died in Mississippi, also a victim of the storm.
According to power outage tracking website Poweroutage.us, more than 650,000 homes and businesses in Tennessee and Kentucky were without power early Saturday, hours after the storm. The website shows that more than 1.3 million customers were without power on Saturday, with Kentucky, Michigan, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia experiencing the most outages.
The storm system brought golf ball-sized hail and tornadoes. There have also been torrential rains, tornadoes and heavy snowfall.
The storms have already left several feet of snow in parts of California. The state had to declare a state of emergency due to issues in several counties. Many of those affected are now preparing for another batch of snow and rain this Saturday.
Tornadoes and floods
In the last few days, there have been tornadoes and floods in several parts of the country. In Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama, storms have damaged numerous homes and businesses and caused flight disruptions at airports on Thursday. At least six tornadoes were recorded in the last few days, five of them in Texas and one in Louisiana. There have been dozens of hailstorms in Texas and Oklahoma.
