India's second-largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel reported an agreement Tuesday with Elon Musk's SpaceX. The billionaire will bring his internet service to the world's most populous country.
As reported by AFP, Airtel indicated that the deal is subject to SpaceX "receiving its own approvals to sell Starlink in India," a service that provides high-speed internet access in remote locations via low-orbit satellites.
However, the future launch of Starlink has generated controversy in India because of the conflict between Elon Musk and businessman Mukesh Ambani over how satellite licenses should be granted in that country.
According to Indian media reports, Starlink’s license is about to be approved.
The presence of Musk’s companies in India is for the moment limited to social network X, although Tesla is preparing to start selling its electric cars in the world's fifth-largest economy and has begun hiring staff.
The announcement comes weeks after Musk met in Washington with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss issues relating to space, transportation, technology and innovation.
