Eight of the hostages who could have been released in the first phase of the truce agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip are dead, David Mencer, an Israeli government spokesman, announced Monday.

"The families were informed of the situation," the official said at a press conference. This means that of the 26 hostages due to return to their country in the coming weeks under the terms of the agreement, only 18 are still alive.

Israel has reported that the next release, which involves three hostages including Arbel Yehoud and Agam Berger, will take place on Thursday. Another three other hostages will be released on Saturday.

Hamas is also holding two Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, along with the body of an IDF soldier killed in 2014. The body of another IDF soldier, also killed in 2014, was recovered in Gaza this month.
