GM's recall covers Corvette models from 2023 to 2025.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the company General Motors (GM) is recalling more than 23,000 Chevrolet Corvettes due to a serious fuel leak problem, which can put both drivers and passengers at risk. In a report dated Aug. 21, the agency detailed that the recall of the vehicles took place after it was discovered that excess fuel could leak into the cars' fuel filler compartment during refueling. NHTSA explained in its report that this could eventually leak into an ignition source, thus multiplying the risk of fire.
According to the agency, the GM recall covers Corvette models from 2023 to 2025, adding that 0.1% of the vehicles recalled by the auto giant contain the defect, which was related to four fires that occurred on different dates and were identified by the company's investigation. According to NHTSA, two of these fires "included evidence indicating that the filling station pump was malfunctioning and caused a fuel spill at the time of the incident." Similarly, the agency commented that, as part of the measure, dealerships will begin to insert from now on a protector to divert spilled fuel and thus avoid accidents that could endanger the lives of both passengers and those near the vehicles.
In a statement sent to The Drive, General Motors commented that it was completely focused on the "excess fuel spillage issue during refueling". Also, the U.S. auto giant detailed, "This is a rare occurrence, and malfunctioning filling station pumps appear to be a contributing factor. The safety of our customers is the highest priority for the entire GM team, and we’re working to remedy this matter as quickly as possible."
What to do if you have a recalled vehicle
Also, NHTSA explained in its report that those who own a vehicle affected by the recall will receive a letter informing them of the safety risk on October 6, and then receive a second one when the solution is officially available.
