Luigi Mangione pleads not guilty to murder of Brian Thompson
The main defendant appeared in a Manhattan courtroom, where he denied being the person responsible for the shots that killed the CEO of UnitedHealth.
Luigi Mangione, who allegedly killed UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson, pleaded not guilty for the first time Monday during his arraignment in a Manhattan courtroom.
The prime suspect is charged with 11 counts, both state and federal, including two for stalking, one for a firearm offense and another for manslaughter, as well as committing an act of terrorism. These charges could carry the death penalty.
Mangione entered the courtroom handcuffed and escorted by several policemen. The defendant was accompanied by his lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who requested additional accommodations be provided to ensure a fair trial.
"He is a young man and two competing jurisdictions are treating him like a human ping-pong ball. They're treating him like a human spectacle," Friedman noted.
The case's investigating judge, Gregory Carro, reported that Mangione's next hearing will be on February 21, 2025.
Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania on Dec. 9, four days after Thompson was killed outside a New York hotel.
