Daniel Comeaux was sworn in nearly a month ago as the new police chief of Dallas, where he is taking a different approach to immigration than his predecessor.
According to Fox News, Comeaux's idea is to align with Texas policies on sanctuary cities and immigration.
"We're going to do what's right. We're always going to be there to help our federal partners," Comeaux said during an interview with Fox News Digital.
"If there's a federal agency that's doing an operation, and they need our assistance, we'll be there to help them, as long as they're doing what's by the law, and they're doing it with respect and the right way, DPD will be there to assist," he continued.
The new Dallas police chief has the backing of Mayor Eric Johnson, who has told Fox News he is willing to support President Donald Trump's efforts to deport undocumented immigrantscharged with violent crimes.
"Of course, we’d support that," Johnson said during the Fox interview. "Of course, we’d stand by President Trump in an effort to get rid of people in our country illegally who have violent criminal records or who commit violent criminal acts here."
Johnson, mayor of Dallas since 2019, announced in 2023 that he was switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican, explaining his decision in a opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal: "Mayor Eric Johnson: America's Cities Need Republicans, and I'm Becoming One."
Texas: Tough on illegal immigration
The state deployed agents on its border with Mexico and launched a campaign to send undocumented immigrants by bus to cities governed by Democrats to draw attention to the immigration crisis in the United States.
