Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro asks Harris not to underestimate Trump and warns that he is a tough debate opponent
"As much as we want to criticize the former president (...) he is a skilled debater," he acknowledged.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro warned in his appearance on ABC's "The View" that former President Donald Trump will be a strong opponent for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential debate. The event will be held Tuesday in Philadelphia, moderated by ABC News, marking the first showdown between the two in the 2024 presidential race.
Shapiro, who came close to being Harris' running mate, noted that while the vice president is a well-prepared candidate, Trump should not be underestimated. "As much as we want to criticize Donald Trump... he is a skilled debater," Shapiro said.
The governor also described Trump as someone "willing to say anything at any time just to get through a question." "He's a showman, he’s been on TV before. Don't underestimate Donald Trump," he added.
Shapiro also opined that Harris, with whom he has a professional relationship of more than 20 years, is up for the challenge, although he acknowledged that the debate will be difficult.
During the segment, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin commented that Harris has moved her campaign toward more centrist positions, which has raised questions about her consistency. However, Shapiro defended the vice president's adjustments, suggesting that "evolving a stance shows strength."
Pennsylvania, governed by Shapiro, is considered one of the key territories in the 2024 election, with 19 Electoral College votes at stake. In the last election, presidential winners prevailed in this state, underscoring the importance of the debate to be held in Philadelphia, which is positioning itself as a pivotal moment in the campaign for both candidates.
